Kampala, Uganda — President Yoweri Museveni has been declared the winner of Uganda’s presidential election, securing another term after a process the authorities described as transparent and fairly conducted. The official announcement confirms an extension of his long leadership, which began in 1986, following a nationwide vote held under heightened security.

According to the Electoral Commission, Museveni won with 72 percent of the vote, while his closest challenger, Bobi Wine, received 25 percent. Six other candidates shared the remaining votes, each earning less than two percent. Voter turnout stood at 52.5 percent, reflecting broad national participation across urban and rural constituencies.

The commission said tallying followed established procedures and legal safeguards. Officials emphasized that results were compiled transparently from polling stations nationwide and announced in line with electoral law. Government representatives reiterated that the outcome reflected the will of voters and that Museveni won fairly.

Museveni, 81, first came to power as a rebel leader and has since won multiple elections. During the campaign, he positioned himself as a guarantor of stability, citing Uganda’s past conflicts and regional security challenges. His platform focused on continuity, economic growth, and national cohesion.

Opposition candidate Bobi Wine disputed the outcome, alleging irregularities without presenting evidence. He called for non-violent protests and demanded the restoration of internet services, which were temporarily restricted by authorities. The government said the measures were aimed at preventing misinformation, fraud, and the incitement of violence during the sensitive post-election period.

Security remained tight in parts of the capital and other urban centers following the vote. Police confirmed several deaths linked to election-related unrest, while officials said investigations were ongoing. Authorities also stated that access controls were implemented in designated security hotspots to deter disorder and protect public safety.

Despite tensions during the campaign, including disruptions to opposition activities, the state maintained that the electoral process met legal standards. Police dismissed accusations of bias, arguing that interventions were necessary to maintain order and prevent chaos.

With the results confirmed, Museveni is set to begin another five-year term. The government says the focus will now shift to reconciliation, economic priorities, and restoring normal services as the country moves forward after the election.
